ABSTRACT

A truly successful portfolio not only shows the end product, but also demonstrates different stages of the creative process. The process of building a costume, prop, or scenic element, however, can accurately illustrate how a designer's or technician's mind works, and demonstrate various skills that may not be evident in the final product. Younger designers tend to be far more involved in the day-to-day construction or creation of their designs, as opposed to more established designers, who may delegate much of the construction process to others. If photographers are doing a show with multiple scenes, they can shoot pictures of the various arrangements for the director and other designers. Pictures of lighting and sound consoles don't really do much to help document the process of lighting or sound design, but there are a few interesting points to make with these areas. The choices surrounding microphone placement within a pit or around a particular instrument might also be worth documenting.
