ABSTRACT

Shutter speed refers to the length of time that the camera's shutter curtain is open, exposing the capture medium to light. A shutter speed of 1/125th of a second might be noted as 125, but would be referred to as a 125th. Of course, there are super-high-speed cameras that are capable of much faster shutter speeds, and it is also possible to have shutter speeds that are measured in whole seconds, or even minutes if need be. In a manual camera, shutter speed might be set through the use of a dial. Photographers are often working in fairly dark situations, which already affect many of their choices, and shutter speed is a crucial part of the equation. Photographers want to be able to capture enough light for the proper exposure of their shot, but they are often attempting to capture people in motion, which is difficult with slow shutter speeds.
