ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of the book. The book is about education and educational practice. It is about change and innovation. The book addresses individual differences in learning, particularly when they are related to learning difficulties or intellectual disabilities. Education is an integral part of society and involves the transmission of knowledge and the activation of learning through the experience of life and formal education. Innovation and change in education generally, and in special education particularly, has not been a series of random events or discoveries. It is difficult to consider instructional and educational practice without entering into the field of educational psychology. Information processing is a major theoretical and practical framework that describes how humans think. Individual differences are found in both intellectual abilities and motivation.
