ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a puzzle about the nature question. The puzzle involves a seemingly incoherent pair of ideas, both of which are at least prima facie plausible. One of them is what I call ‘the doxasticism about delusions’ (DD), according to which delusions are beliefs. The other is what I call ‘the causal difference thesis’ (CDT), according to which many delusions do not play doxastic causal roles. The puzzle arises from the observation that, on the one hand, both DD and CDT are plausible at least to some extent but, on the other hand, there is a clear tension between them (2.2).
