ABSTRACT

This chapter is designed as a step-by-step approach to building the skills as a director. For Konstantin Sergeievich Stanislavski, directing was a skill that needed developing and nurturing, the exercises in the chapter helps students to fine tune their skills ready for directing their first play. For more experienced directors, these exercises give them a chance to brush up on their skills and deepen their understanding of the craft of directing. The chapter is ideal for drama students in training where actors and rehearsal rooms are usually easily found. For those of students on a directing course, the chapter gives them a clear structure to follow to harness their skills. For many student actors or teachers of drama and theatre there will be a time in their career when they take on the role of director. There is a natural progression that many actors feel where they want to orchestrate proceedings from the auditorium or work from behind the camera.
