ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines exercises in tempo-rhythm and some simple voice and movement exercises for one to practise. Tempo-rhythm is our pace, both mental and physical, and the pace of everything around us and everything we do. Tempo-rhythm links the mind, body and spirit together in harmony. People have an inner tempo rhythm and an outer tempo-rhythm. The voice is one of the means actors have to communicate what their 'mind is creating clearly, deeply and invisibly'. The voice is an instrument that needs exercising in order to release its full capacity. Our bodies enable the physical embodiment of the role, conveying 'the life of the human spirit'. The body on display must be healthy, beautiful and in its movements expressive and harmonious'. For our bodies to express our inner workings, they must be flexible, strong and supple.
