ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the developing literature regarding mindfulness meditation as it relates to the field of neuropsychology. Although there are many forms of mindfulness meditation, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is a program that is particularly notable in the sense that, from the time of its founding, the primary focus has been on providing mindfulness training and interventions to individuals with health issues in a medical setting. In addition to brain-based alterations, significant changes in immune function, inflammatory markers and physical health have been reported with MBSR and other mindfulness training. Neuroimaging studies of Buddhist monks and other master practitioners of meditation have shown significantly altered brain structure and function. Studies have also been conducted to look at how participation in mindfulness practice might modulate neurogenic inflammation. The chapter provides some examples of studies evaluating outcomes from MBSR programs on physical and mental health in individuals with stress and chronic medical issues.
