ABSTRACT
A strong technology background is therefore essential for a good security leader. Perhaps, the most common technology background for security leaders is in networking and routing, often with a strong technical operations focus. Understanding data and traffic flows in a complex networked environment is maybe the most foundational and technical backgrounds for the modern security leader. This is similar in the way that a background in law enforcement is essential for the primarily physical security leader of yesteryear. It is also similar in the way a background in application security is fast becoming a key ingredient of the future CISO who is tasked with risk management in a largely virtualized cloud environment. Naturally, a network-focused background leads to a network-oriented solution matrix. The perimeter defense, is still a crucial part of any security strategy, but the world has evolved dramatically in the past 20 years.
