ABSTRACT

The 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery has provoked new projects and movements in the Netherlands. Conferences, educational programmes, tours and debates as well as new exhibitions were organized and continue to take place in what will be a two-year commemorative celebration, connecting the 150th anniversary of emancipation with the 200th anniversary of the prohibition of the slave trade (1814-2014). The commemorative year 2013 included the celebration, attended by the new Dutch King Willem Alexander, on 1 July, of 150 years abolition of slavery since 1863.
