ABSTRACT

The signing of the "Declaration on Strategic Partnership between Russia and India" in 2000 imparted new impulse in the strategic partnership which had noticeably waned in terms of activity levels after the implosion of the Soviet Union. The purpose of the exercise is to understand the nuances in the bilateral relations between India and Russia in the post Cold War era. Economic ties between the two countries continue to pose a major challenge to the relationship as the bilateral trade is inadequate over today despite the robust partnership. Many in the academic community have constantly critiqued the depreciation in India-Russia relations and raised questions regarding the uncertainties in the partnership. Unlike the cooperation between India and the US, and Russia and China, the strategic partnership between India and Russia has acknowledged and valued the long traditional bilateral relations in the international geo-political realm. Global situations can put countries in a dilemma when one's actions find conformity with other international actors.
