ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of individual types of capsules and unveils the origins and designs of capsule units—as dwelling units for extreme conditions, as products of the development of new materials, social changes regarding mobility and nomadism, technological equipment of individual prostheses, biological metaphors, and Structuralism.

Classification and taxonomy of the capsule units are presented according to their level of autonomy and possible ways of agglomeration. Based on the analysis of pioneering examples of the capsule concept, two main types of capsule units are evident: An autonomous self-sufficient type, which can be either independent or composite; and a connective type, which is connected to infrastructure or the frame of a megastructure, dependent on it, and appears in the form of a plug-in, clip-on, or insert.
