Chapter Overview and Goals The presence of a free surface on a channel simplifies some aspects of flow analysis, since the pressure variation is hydrostatic in most flow regimes of interest. Flows in open channels are strongly influenced by gravity and momentum forces; hence the Froude number is the important descriptor for these flows.
