ABSTRACT
In this Introduction we record some brief details about the discovery and development of liquid crystals and their continuum descriptions. Kelker [143] has written an intricate and authoritative account of the early history and development of liquid crystals, with some more detailed aspects on the early history being discussed by Kelker and Knoll [144].
