ABSTRACT
One of the main interests in the static theory of liquid crystals is in the competition that occurs between the orientation of the director on the boundary and the orientation within the bulk of a sample, particularly when the director is influenced by an electric or magnetic field. We shall concentrate on nematics throughout this Chapter and make passing comments on cholesterics when appropriate.
