The Bootstrap

The technique of bootstrapping was first considered in a systematic manner by Efron (1979a), although the generality of the method means that it was used in some circumstances before that time. The label bootstrapping was used by Efron to follow in the spirit of Tukey’s (1958) use of jackknifing to describe his earlier resampling method. Thus, whereas Tukey’s technique is supposed to be analogous to the use of the scout’s jackknife, Efron’s technique is supposed to be analogous to someone pulling himself or herself out of mud with his or her bootstraps.
