ABSTRACT

Chapter 5, the enumeration of the permutations of n with a given number

of xed points and the permutations of n of a given rank was carried out.

Also, the (linear) permutations of n and the circular permutations of n

with a given number of successions of points were enumerated. Further, the

permutations of a nite set of n elements may be distinguished according to

their decomposition into disjoint cycles. A host of interesting enumeration

problems emerges from this consideration.
