TYPES OF METAMORPHISM Regional metamorphism involves high temperature and pressure. Occurs in mountain chains due to continental collision on plate boundaries. Extends over large areas. Thermal or contact metamorphism involves high temperature only. Occurs in metamorphic aureoles, each 1 m – 2 km wide, around igneous intrusions where rock has been baked. Dynamic metamorphism at high pressure only is rare.
