ABSTRACT
Until now we have concentrated on the behaviour of a function near a critical point. We now consider functions near a non-critical point. For functions of one variable we recall that f ′(x) > 0 implies that f is increasing near x and f ′(x) < 0 implies that f is decreasing near x. Can we find an analogue of this result for functions of two variables?
