ABSTRACT

In thinking about a measurement process, one quickly realizes that weather conditions, road conditions, and the driving schedule all affect fuel economy. All of these conditions vary from customer to customer and even day to day for the same customer. Fortunately, this problem had existed for many years and a prescribed dynamometer test had already been developed. This test determines fuel economy and is felt to be indicative of normal customer use. The dynamometer results are continuous, fairly repeatable, and accepted as a standard by both government and industry. For the specific diesel Engine tested under a specific dynamometer schedule, there is a highly significant effect due to Engines. No other factor or interaction is significant. Engine to engine differences account for more than 50% of the variability in brake specific fuel economy. Neither Injectors nor Fuel nor any interaction contribute significantly to the variability.
