ABSTRACT

Consistent with Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching node functions, such functions in the Sigma switch are done through what is known as the self-routing principle. The matrix or cross-point switch technology as indicated earlier was originally developed to support telephony and it refers to space-division switching. A type of fabric that is acquiring popularity among the vendors of ATM switches is the broadcast matrix. Single-stage network consists of switching elements that are connected to the inputs and outputs of a switching network. The following are the switching techniques evolved to realize the translation of multiplexing positions, namely, space, time, frequency, address, and code. A blocking switching network may deny an information unit at a specified multiplexing position on its input side to a multiplexing position on the desired outbound line. A drawback of Banyan networks is their inability to support multicasting. Banyan networks are not able to multicast an incoming cell to a number of outgoing links.
