ABSTRACT
In many engineering applications it is necessary to consider the distribution of
some linear combination of random variables. For example, in the manufacture of
single-cylinder motor cycle engines, the cylinders and pistons are selected at
random. The clearance is the cylinder diameter minus the piston diameter and will
clearly depend on variations in both sizes. Another example is the sample mean,
which is the sum of the sample values divided by the sample size.
