ABSTRACT

The original definition of the Fourier transform was based on continuous functions,

possibly well-defined ones such as a polynomial, or perhaps a general function

such as that shown in Figure 46.1.

In engineering it is more likely that a series of data points will have been

collected rather than a continuous representation. The data are also often taken at a

constant rate and is therefore evenly spaced in time. Such a representation is shown

in Figure 46.2.
