ABSTRACT
Consider the basic single degree-of-freedom system depicted in Figure 1.1. A free-body diagram of the mass m is shown in Figure 2.1. In general, for a system comprising one or more masses (that is, with one or more degrees of freedom), a free-body diagram of a given mass is a sketch of the mass isolated from the rest of the system, showing all the forces acting upon it.
