ABSTRACT
A structural engineer must ensure that the design of a structure is safe and serviceable, so that the chance of it failing during its design lifetime is sufficiently small. This is achieved by satisfying a number of limit states. This chapter deals with the limit state associated with the possible occurrence of instability and presents some fundamental concepts related to basic stability theory.
