“Real” objects are three-dimensional, or 3D. So why should we consider 2D objects, such as the 2D lines in this chapter? Consider Figure 3.1. It shows North America’s most celebrated residential buildling: Falling-water, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Clearly the building, illustrated in Figure 3.2, is 3D; yet in order to describe it, we need 2D floor plans outlining the building’s structure. These floorplans consist almost entirely of 2D lines.
