ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the potential for producing electricity from wind power at Llyn Efyrnwy using a combination of a wind turbine and an electricity generator, known as a wind energy conversion system. It discusses the potential for electricity generation from wind power at Llyn Efyrnwy, based on a wind energy conversion system (WECS) with a turbine 3 m in radius. A separate mathematical model is used to estimate the power that the wind produces and, hence, the amount of electricity that could be generated by a small WECS based at this site. Wind speed data recorded by an AWS over the course of a year are analyzed to determine mean wind speed at Llyn Efyrnwy and the extent to which the wind speed varies around this value. The long-term mean wind speed at a particular site is one factor that determines the potential for electricity generation from wind power; variation of the wind speed about the mean value is another.
