ABSTRACT
Removal of organic matter (substrate) in the activated sludge process comprises three mechanisms:
(a) adsorption and also agglomeration onto microbial fl ocs; (b) assimilation, which is the conversion to new microbial cell material; (c) mineralization, which is complete oxidation.
