ABSTRACT
This chapter critiques the current status of career development theory, in particular focusing on an ongoing contradiction of proliferation and parsimony. Within what appears to be a vital and growing field, there remains a disproportionate focus on traditional theories to the detriment of new developments. In addition, the field remains disconnected and despite almost four decades of attention, continues to focus on narrow populations. Future directions are presented which provide new and diverse perspectives.
