ABSTRACT

This chapter describes open access resources for pragmatics instruction that are currently available on the Internet across a variety of languages, instructional contexts, and learner levels with an emphasis on a web-based tutorial (WBT) that was designed for instructing complaints and requests to second language (L2) learners of Spanish. The chapter begins with an overview of the Speech Act Theory (Searle, 1969), the Noticing Hypothesis (Schmidt, 1990, 1993, 2001; Schmidt and Frota, 1986), and the Politeness Theory (Brown and Levinson, 1978, 1987), as these provide the theoretical foundation for the WBT. The chapter also includes techniques and strategies for instructing pragmatics using web-based resources to learners who have varying L2 proficiency levels.
