ABSTRACT
: This chapter presents an overview of punk’s ideological and philosophical orientations and their origins in political movements dating back several centuries. It describes punk’s diverse, sometimes polarized leanings towards more extreme, radical positions; punk is perhaps primarily about emancipation, for individuals and groups. The chapter traces the history of punk pedagogical thinking, practice and activism through critical pedagogy, anarchist pedagogy and extant work on punk pedagogy. Punk is understood as diverse, messy, inclusive and, above all, critical. Punk pedagogies aspire to challenge teachers and learners, to question these positionalities, and never to stand still. The chapter presents an overview of each of the remaining chapters in the book, before calling readers to take necessary action through understanding, creating and curating liminal educational spaces—to embrace punk pedagogies.
