ABSTRACT

This paper surveys the policy, legal and management considerations which presently face the fisheries regimes of the Pacific island states and considers their impact on the wider societies. Following an outline of the various fisheries in the region and the broad policy objectives which have been establi shed for their further development, some of the major legal issues associated with the management of fish resources are examined and an assessment is made of the contribution of the Forum Fisheries Agency to the management regimes of the region. The paper concludes with some pointers to possible prob lem areas in the future.
