ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the great transformation in the experience of disability and advocates greater cross-disability training in counseling programs, accreditation guidelines that mandate disability training, and licensing and certifying requirements that include evidence of completed disability training, including supervised clinical experience counseling IWDs. The following question is asked and answered: If this is a counseling textbook, why include Chapter Two, with its medical and biological definitions of disability? Chapter Two is included in order to provide a brief introduction to disability, comparing clinical and legal definitions. In order for counselors to provide services to IWDs, it is necessary to understand what a disability is and what a disability is not. This book is intended to be a start of a transformation of the helping professions.
