ABSTRACT
The physician’s role, in the hospital and in the community, is important to the success of the sustainability effort. Therefore, it is essential to bring physicians into the sustainability dialogue at the earliest possible point and to identify physicians who will champion the cause and engage their colleagues around sustainability. Chapter 3 explores physician engagement through the lens of sustainability. Embracing sustainability may add value to the hospital’s relationship with physicians if it adds value to the physician–patient relationship. Physicians are positioned to carry the hospital’s sustainability message to constituencies which view physicians as credible voices to be respected in the public dialogue.
