ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on energy and carbon reduction, although, to consider the context of how the Chinese people have put environmental issues, and the fight against pollution, at the top of the political agenda. It discusses urban density and patterns of settlement are much more like Europe than the USA's much more dispersed patterns of settlement and large floor space per person. Public policy is tending towards entrenching urban density as a means of reducing environmental impact. Combating pollution has sharply risen up the political agenda in recent years as the middle classes have expanded and demanded a clean environment. The Chinese Government has immense pressure on it to ensure that radical targets for pollution reduction are achieved. The Chinese method has achieved results, but often on the basis of a lack of competition and inefficient results.
