ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 continues to explore voice, music and text through several perspectives of intelligibility. Related to that, it explores legato as a fundamental aspect of vocal practice. Linguistic meaning is also explored through several contrasted composers’ work, as well as the potentialities of the absence of text. Examples are detailed of structures, such as recitative and aria, which are explored for their specific dramatic function. Language is treated in unique ways by music, which is further detailed, especially in relation to melisma, which is explored in detail.
