ABSTRACT

This chapter traces three initiatives undertaken by NEAD/Freedom School to partner with East High both before and after the UR East EPO partnership to address the needs of youth who were not succeeding within the traditional educational setting. The authors present a sampling of their findings with the goal of presenting youth and family perspectives on the developmental pathways and trajectories they were engaging with, their goals and expectations, the challenges they faced across contexts, and the strategies and resources they were adopting to work toward their goals. The UR Freedom-East program builds on a rich history of collaborative initiatives between NEAD, as a community-based organization (CBO), and East High School, the largest high school in Rochester and the school a large number of Beechwood youth attend.
