ABSTRACT

In between markets and hierarchies, networks act as the negotiating interface between firms, workers, state and society. International business networks facilitate the integration of foreign markets and the expansion of economic activities across borders. This chapter explores the role of international business networks in the process of globalization, analyzing how they contributed to the making of global business. It focuses on corporate networks and elites as well as Business Interest Associations (BIAs) from the mid-19th century to today. By creating common values and interests, sharing knowledge and lobbying for fewer or more consistent regulation, both international corporate networks and international BIAs play an important role in lowering the barriers to globalization. However, several considerations regarding the emergence and evolution of international business networks, as well as the remaining importance of the national level nuance this conclusion.
