ABSTRACT

The infiltration of the naturalism of Laozi and Zhuangzi into Chinese literature was mainly in the form of the pursuit of the establishment of nature in both literary creation and literary criticism. The core thought of Tao Yuanming, a leading poet of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, was returning to Nature. Nature was the supreme standard guiding his life and creativity. The influence of the thought of Laozi and Zhuangzi was also deep on the works of the great Tang poet Li Bai, as his poetic creation too sought a kind of natural beauty. From the point of view of literary criticism, the earliest instance of a stress on Nature' comes in Liu Xie's Carving a Dragon with a Literary Heart * On Tao, the Source. It is by grasping firmly the idea of exalting nature and the literary concept of exalting the beauty of nature that people can get a fairly profound understanding of the Chinese people and Chinese literature.
