ABSTRACT
In this chapter the author recollects the memories of his early life. Some of the Warburgians the author knew were offering seminars to London University students, and he convinced Wittkower to allow the author to sit in his weekly ones two years running. Nicolson was then the editor of the Burlington Magazine, and he took sufficient notice of the author's student efforts to ask him to write the occasional review for his monthly. Sigfried Giedion's major work, Mechanization Takes Command, arrived in the Burlington Magazine offices for review on its 1948 publication. That review was to be the author's first serious essay in the history of art. He took two years over it, smarting under Nicolson's reproof. Many years later, the author was lucky enough to have a chance to respond to this reproof when he gave a course of twelve lectures at Columbia on Art Nouveau, which he dedicated to Nicolson's memory.
