ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the trend of agricultural credit flow of Assam compared to the north-eastern region and India. Agricultural credit in India received due attention after the nationalisation of banks, and subsequently growth pacified in the later period. Kisan Credit Card (KCC) is one of the key products developed to improve the farmers' accessibility to bank credit, simplify credit delivery mechanism and provide more flexibility in the use of credit. A model scheme of KCC formulated by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) in 1998-99 is being implemented in all the states and union territories. NABARD was set up in 1982 for promotion of rural development in general and agriculture in particular. NABARD took over the entire task of the Agricultural Refinance and Development Corporation and refinancing functions of the Reserve Bank of India in relation to state cooperatives and regional rural banks.
