The chapter analyses the changing pattern of workforce and labour force participation rates. It discusses the sectoral distribution of workers by broad sectors and the employment opportunities that are available to female workers. The chapter discusses the changes in employment growth rates and associated developments between 1993-94/2004-5 and 2004-5/2011-12. It explores the behaviour of economic growth and employment and their relationship. The chapter is based exclusively on National Sample Survey data on employment and unemployment. It analyses the employment situation in the NER and among its eight individual states. The chapter demonstrates that the NER and most of its states suffered a varying degree of employment setback during the post-2005 period. It identifies areas of policy concern.
