ABSTRACT

The human development scenario in northeast India presents a diverse picture across various states and also across different human development indicators. Northeast India has a history of relative isolation, underdevelopment, poor infrastructural growth, low levels of urbanisation and industrialisation, socio-political instability, and poor delivery system. Literacy is the main factors determining the human resource development of any region. It is the most significant societal element that holds the key to the process of socio-economic development. The rural-urban gap in literacy level continues to be a cause of concern for the policy makers of the country. The fact that a number of educational flagship programmes have been introduced by the government. Children have better access to schooling today compared with the past. Gross enrolment ratio is computed as the ratio of total enrolment at a particular level irrespective of the age of the children to the total population in the age group expected to be at that level of schooling.
