ABSTRACT

This chapter describes thematically the ideas of the new Trinitarian theologians such as such as Pannenberg, Moltmann, Zizioulas, LaCugna, and Boff, who have not only salvaged the doctrine of the Triune God from the bondage to mere abstract speculation, but also reclaimed its radical pragmatic consequences for Christian faith and life. It argues that for most of them, the economy of salvation, not abstract metaphysics, is the starting point of an authentic Trinitarian hermeneutics of God. Exploring these theologians’ understandings of the personal distinctions and relationships among the persons of the Trinity, the chapter affirms their hermeneutics of the unity of the Trinitarian communion as perichoresis. This perichoretic unity, which does not exclude, but includes humanity and the whole cosmic community, is an ongoing and eschatological reality.
