ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidance on the assessment of psychological conditions. The accurate detection and tracking of psychological conditions greatly enhances a counselor’s ability to provide appropriate and responsive clinical interventions. Objective assessments for psychological conditions such as those falling under categories of mood, anxiety, trauma, eating, and psychosis are reviewed. Given the abundance of available assessments, this chapter selects those that maximize efficiency and clinical accuracy. Each questionnaire, inventory, or scale is discussed in regard to appropriate clinical scenarios for use, necessary user qualifications, and preliminary scoring and interpretation information. A case study is provided to contextualize the use of such an assessment in an everyday clinical scenario.
