ABSTRACT
Solar radiation received by Earth outside the atmosphere, measured as radiation flux, which is power per unit area or power density (Chapter 2), is transmitted through the atmosphere and reaches the Earth’s surface. Incoming solar radiation is also called irradiance and insolation. We will have more to say about atmospheric processes later in the chapter, but for now let us focus on the distribution of this power density over the planet’s surface and its variation over time.
