ABSTRACT

As an African-American female growing up in the northeastern part of New York City, the Bronx, she learned a lot. Her mother was an active member of my elementary and middle school Parent Teacher's Association (PTA); as a result she became friends with many of the parents, specifically mothers, in the area. She discovered that her Learning Community was entitled The American Sojourn: From Jim Crow to Barack Obama. The Learning Community (LC) was explained to the group of approximately 25 students that they would be taking all of their first semester classes together and would work cohesively with six different professors to provide us with a smooth transition into college. She had three favorite LC classes: Africana Studies, BSC 101: Foundations of Inquiry, and Integrated Hour. Critical thinking skills are not something that is taught in school, in truth it is simply hoped that a person acquires such skills along the way in life.
