ABSTRACT
Chapter 2 includes an account of the theory of loanword phonology and investigates mechanisms of loanword adaptation through a case study of Mandarin loanwords in Korean. The result of this case study shows that in order to clarify the adaptation patterns of Mandarin loanwords in Korean, both perception and phonology should be taken into account. This case study also demonstrates that borrowers often adopt different strategies, including different constraints and different rankings, or priority of constraints, in the process of borrowing.
