ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at leadership for effective inclusion in schools, the role of the headteacher in leading the inclusive school and the added demands and responsibilities placed on the leadership of an inclusive school in order to achieve successful performance. It focuses on current and past leadership practice and development in leadership theory are presented, in order to provide a contextual understanding of theory and practice, along with a review of significant studies on the development of school leadership. The chapter reflects on some models of leadership in schools and recent thinking on what constitutes successful leadership. The challenge to respond to changes in educational policy and practice nationally and globally has highlighted the need to educate for leadership and social responsibility. Studies on the characteristics of successful schools have consistently stressed the importance of the quality of a school's leadership on the school's performance.
