ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on developing children's ability to find information from books and on developing their reading skills. It first discusses how do find information from books using an index. There are many ways of reading a passage to gather information. Three main methods are skimming, scanning, and close reading. The method selection depends on the purpose of the reading and the type of reading material. Information can be presented in the form of charts, tables and graphs. The chapter guides the readers to understand charts, tables and graphs. Pie charts are used to show the proportions of a set of figures. A bar chart shows information in the form of rectangular bars of different heights. Finally, the chapter includes an acitivity that encourages the children to use the figures which state the average annual temperature in Celsius month by month for the Australian city of Sydney to draw a graph similar to given image.
