Developing writing skills
This chapter focuses on developing a step-by-step approach to writing reports on a topic they have been investigating and on how to write instructions, arguments and reports of science experiments. This present approach includes the following steps: defining the purpose and audience; collecting information and ideas; planning; writing a draft; revising and redrafting; proofreading; and producing the final copy. Presenting information visually as a pie chart can often be a useful way of reporting some of children findings. The chapter contains activities to develop children's understanding of the features of different kinds of writing and stresses the importance of choosing the right register and writing in standard English, avoiding using slang and txtspk. Further activities include hints on how to improve spelling and punctuation. The chapter further describes different sentence structures that are used in different types of writing. It also discusses several sections of the report of a science experiment.
